PSL kits 2022-23: ranking every home and away shirt from worst to best | Goal.com Uganda

Who are the winners and losers of the South Africa replica shirt shakedown?

Still sporting the same design they wore last season, Maritzburg’s Lotto designs stick with their traditional blue and white for their home design.

There’s a lot going on on the shirt, with an uneven criss-cross pattern clashing badly with a green sponsor’s logo.

The less said about the Team of Choice’s grey and fluorescent alternative kit, the better.

A patterned fabric can’t help either the dark blue home kit or the light orange away kit from being thoroughly uninspiring additions to the PSL this season.

SSU used to have some strong designs during their partnership with Kappa, but Umbro hardly broke a sweat with these lacklustre designs, which could be confused for training kits.

Gallants have unveiled a new home kit for 22-23—a green effort with dark, patterned sleeves—but for now, they’re still using last season’s strip, with the club telling GOAL that the design is intended to be a fan jersey.

Marumo Gallants' new kit certainly has potential, but when will they start wearing it...?@_Marumogallants? #AbsaPrem #PSL pic.twitter.com/u3hhqHy0ce

Gallants’ green Umbro away kit with blue splotches didn’t look so good last season, and it doesn’t look any better this time around either.

The blue home kit with green splashes doesn’t look much better, and while we applaud creativity, Gallants look to have just missed the mark with this collection.

"The kit is influenced by its corporate identity and pay offline, Bahlabane Ba Ntwa (warriors) represented by a camouflage look and feel,” the club said last year. “The home kit is navy blue, the away kit is green, while the alternative jersey is gold.”

We’re certainly excited about them switching to the newer designs as soon as possible.

The KwaZulu-Natal outfit opted to announce the signing of Memela at the same time as unveiling their new kits and…to be honest…the addition of the former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu attacker was far more memorable.

This design from @RichardsBayFC_ might be one of the most uninspired and boring designs of the PSL season. This guy's face says it all. Something a bit more innovative next time, @JomaSportUK?#AbsaPrem #PSL pic.twitter.com/XYRn0y8oxO

The home kit is a fairly low-key dark blue effort with white trim as well as faint pinstripes, while the away kit is a near mirror image with a slightly darker trim.

A fairly uninspired effort for the Natal Rich Boyz, who will hope that their football gets pulses rating even if their kits don’t.

Taking a leaf from the Venezia school of fashion, Royal AM have opted for a black kit with gold trim and a prominent eagle’s wing across the front of the shirt.

Coupled with the club’s coat of arms, it risks being quite a tacky combination.

These efforts are popular among some portions of PSL supporters—particularly with black kits more appreciated than they used to be—but there’s something quite inauthentic about Thwihli Thwahla’s overt ‘royal’ branding, considering they bought their place among the elite from Bloemfontein Celtic.

The buttoned collar is a nice touch, while the yellow and red sleeve trim is certainly eye-catching.

A simple white design from the Chilli Boys, set off with some subtle black hoops in varying degrees of thickness, as worn by the club last season.

The design has been created by the club’s technical sponsor RADA, a brand owned by Chippa Mpengesi, the club’s chairman.

Golden Arrows have doubled down on their unique identity with their dark green home kit, which has a fetching arrow design in two parallel bands down the front of the home jersey.

It’s striking, but perhaps not as innovative as it might have been given the reservoir of creative options that accompany the Golden Arrows brand.

As with other green kits in the league, the kit is offset with gold bands around the collar and arms.

Arrows do deserve credit, however, for their ‘lightning bolt’ away kit.

Sekhukhune’s efforts are pretty strange concoctions.

This collection from @SekhukhuneFc and Kappa is a bit of a dichotomy. Upper half = boring template. Bottom half = Brilliant use of Pendi iconography to represent Babina Noko fans.#AbsaPrem #PSL pic.twitter.com/JQkvQfgXzp

The top half are a fairly boring Kappa design—you might recognise it from the bargain bins some 20 years ago—although the efforts are saved by the bottom half of the kits, which feature a unique design inspired by the club’s totem.

The porcupine (noko) is a key element of Pendi iconography, and Babina Noko fans can certainly wear this aspirational design with pride.

It’s quite hard to get Pirates kits wrong, and their relationship with Adidas has consistently turned out excellent designs.

This year’s effort certainly ticks all the boxes, but there’s nothing particularly new or striking about the design.

Some supporters have expressed displeasure that the base colour isn’t as black as in previous years, while the white away kit isn’t particularly innovative either—despite the patterned fabric.

The Buccaneers are one of a number of clubs to have turned to a white away kit, although without the creativity of some of their rivals.

A classy contribution from Puma, whose relationship with Mamelodi Sundowns continues apace.

The sports manufacturer have paired the reigning champions famous gold base with an effective green trim, with the fabric’s pattern adding an extra element of flair.

Puma have described it as a "debossed African print of calabashes, antelope, drums, pyramids and warriors" as they look to channel Sundowns’ African heritage and battling spirit this season.

“As footballers, we want to look stylish on-an-off the pitch,” said Sundowns brand manager Teko Modise. “The texture of the jersey feels fresh, and the design is slick – I trust that this and the debossed symbols on the jersey will propel the players to the next level and continue to fight regardless of how tough it might be."

The gold home kit is complemented by the Brazilians’ blue away kit.

Perhaps the most ambitious PSL efforts of the lot this season, TS Galaxy’s new kit submissions are a work of art, with a swirling squared design replicated on both the home and away shirts.

The home strip—in the club’s traditional black-and-red colour scheme—is a thoroughly vibrant design, while the multicoloured bands around the collar and sleeves are magnificent additions.

For the away design, Galaxy have gone for a light blue and off-pink scheme, which contrasts beautifully with the colourful trim.

Some supporters are unhappy because the home kit isn’t a major departure from last year’s effort, while the old light blue and white away kit will be missed.

Jessica Motaung-- Marketing and Commercial Director at Kaizer Chiefs—is confident that this year’s Nike designs will sit comfortably alongside the team’s classic kits from yesteryear.

It’s an innovative design from the manufacturers—celebrating half a century of existence—with a geometric print bringing something modern and eye-catching to the PSL catwalk.

The away kit is an instant classic, with Nike coupling a simple white kit with the instantly recognisable gold of Chiefs.

If the PSL was won on kits alone, Amakhosi would be in the running…unfortunately for the Glamour Boys, they have to do the business on the pitch.

The latest in a long line of fine Swallows kits, this design is a really innovative effort from Umbro.

The silhouetted Swallows on the maroon fabric bring movement and distance to the design, creating a really unique kit.

The white and maroon work well together, although the white away kit, which features a giant maroon swallow across the chest, isn’t of the same quality as the home effort.

Nonetheless, could this collection be among the highlights of the PSL kit bag this season?

A magnificent addition to the PSL catwalk since their addition to the top flight, Cape Town City haven’t let the side down this season either.

Their home kit features a stunning swirling design—with two shades of blue—with vibrant yellow trim at the neck and sleeves.

The yellow CTCFC logo sits well alongside the striking FNB logo, and the Mother City outfit will certainly represent South Africa with pride in the Caf Champions League this season while wearing this design.

Another strong contribution from AmaZulu, who have paired with Umbro for their latest designs.

The turquoise home strip features a patterned graphic on the fabric, offset with dark orange trim on the sleeves and a jagged orange design down the shanks.

The classic AmaZulu logo and the Spar sponsor completes a really strong effort.

The away kit has similar qualities, with the white and dark green colour scheme complimented by three bands of tonal text in the fabric.

From a distance, the text—hymns of the Zulu nation—represents faint stripes down the jersey.

Their promotional video is also a touch of class.

Le Coq Sportif are a perfect partner for Stellenbosch, and their 22-23 designs are a perfect representation of the elements that make Stellies such a unique addition to the PSL.

𝙒𝙚𝘼𝙧𝙚𝙊𝙣𝙚 It's more than a football jersey. #StellenboschFC #ProudlyStellenbosch 🍇#WeAreOne pic.twitter.com/sFx2FBQP8O

These designs have Winelands splashed all over them, with a gold trim setting off the maroon base for the home offering, and a white design with gold and maroon features on the away design.

"This is a kit that speaks to a message of purpose, it speaks to a message of a moment, and it speaks to a message of what this club stands for,” the club announced when the kits were unveiled.

Seriously classy stuff from Stellenbosch, as they look to build on last year’s fourth-placed finish.
