Reggie Lawson enjoyed his best week of the season on the mound for the Missions — 92/3 innings, with one run, three hits and six walks allowed. Lawson also struck out 13.

Highlighting the week that was and previewing the upcoming week for the San Antonio Missions:

The San Antonio Missions will wear and auction custom Uvalde baseball jerseys during Thursday’s game, with proceeds supporting the Robb School Memorial Fund.

Fans attending the 7:05 p.m. matchup at Wolff Stadium against the Amarillo Sod Poodles can bid throughout the game and the auction concludes 15 minutes after the final out. Gates open at 6 p.m.

The jersey design is a replica of the Uvalde High Coyotes, paying tribute to the community that lost 19 children and two teachers in a shooting May 24 at Robb Elementary School.

“Uvalde has special meaning for the Missions. Wolff Stadium has hosted numerous group outings and even Coyote Baseball playoff games,” Missions president Burl Yarbrough said. “Anything we as an organization can do in this awful situation to help provide for the Uvalde community, we are honored to do so.”

The Missions credited the “extraordinary efforts” of Wilson Sporting Goods for supplying the jerseys, condensing a two-month creation process into less than two weeks.

San Antonio (30-25) claimed four of six meetings with Corpus Christi (24-33) last week, building a two-game lead over Frisco (29-28) atop the Texas League South.

The Missions haven’t dropped a series since the second week of the season, besting the Hooks last week despite shuffling through 20 roster moves since June 6.

The week started with six players moving to the COVID-19 list and the promotion of standout center fielder Esteury Ruiz to Triple-A, leaving San Antonio without the Texas League’s leader in stolen bases (37) and on-base percentage (.474).

The Missions opened the series with four newcomers in the starting lineup. Juan Zabala proved to be a standout, reaching base safely in all six games.

Acquired by the San Diego Padres in a trade this month, Zabala made four starts at designed hitter and one each at catcher and first base, going 8 for 20 (.400) with four walks and four stolen bases.

Pitcher Reggie Lawson, the No. 17 prospect in the Padres organization, per MLB.com, posted his best week of the season. Making two starts in the series after his previous outing scheduled for June 4 was canceled due to the Missions’ COVID-19 outbreak, Lawson threw a combined 9 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits and six walks with 13 strikeouts.

He entered the week with a 9.43 ERA, coming off a start May 25 in which he gave up six runs on six hits, including three homers, in 2 2/3 innings. Lawson was limited to just four games last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery and his five-inning showing Tuesday marked his longest outing and first win since May 2, 2019.

During Sunday’s start, Lawson struck out eight batters — his most in a game since April 26, 2019 — including a run of five straight across the second and third innings.

San Antonio was otherwise light on prospects amid last week’s roster turnover, getting just two games in the outfield from No. 23 Tirso Ornelas and 1 2/3 innings on the mound from No. 14 Kevin Kopps.

Thomas Eshelman posted the longest outing for a Missions player this season Wednesday, throwing an eight-inning complete game in a 2-0 loss.

Eshelman allowed a pair of solo homers in the sixth inning but otherwise scattered eight hits, finishing with four strikeouts and no walks.

A 27-year-old with MLB experience in Baltimore the past three seasons, Eshelman has often shouldered larger pitch counts than many of the team’s younger prospects, leading San Antonio with 45 innings across eight starts this year.

Connor Hollis continued his surge at the plate, going 11 for 21 (.524) during the series with seven walks to lead the Texas League in hits and walks for the week.

Since dropping his average to .203 on the first day of May, Hollis is hitting .410 with a .526 on-base percentage across his past 33 games, drawing 30 walks while notching 10 steals and four homers.

2: Walkoff losses for San Antonio this year, the most recent coming via a three-run homer from Wilyer Abreu that gave the Hooks a 7-4 win Thursday.

6: Strikeouts by Moises Lugo during 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief Friday, matching the most in a game for a Missions reliever this season.

.314: Slugging percentage for a depleted San Antonio lineup last week, ranking next-to-last in the Texas League.

3.25: Staff ERA for the Missions last week, ranking as the best in the Texas League.

70: Strikeouts for San Antonio pitchers last week, more than any other Texas League club.
