Delsea's Jared Schoppe scored three touchdowns in the Crusaders' season-opening win over Delran.Al Amrhein | For NJ Advance Media
Delsea’s dominant performance in its season opener last week was not very surprising.
Deptford, on the other hand, certainly turned some heads with a fantastic effort of its own.
Both programs will look to stay hot against challenging opponents this week, while Woodstown is another team hoping to ride the momentum from a week ago and improve to 2-0.
The South Jersey Times has Week 2 of the local football schedule covered with a closer look at the big matchups and predictions for every game involving an area team from Bill Evans, Kevin Minnick and Matt Cosentino.
Jared Schoppe ran for three touchdowns as Delsea opened the 30th season of coach Sal Marchese’s tenure with a commanding 47-7 win over Delran. The Crusaders built a 40-0 advantage by halftime.
Delsea should be expecting a closer game this week in a West Jersey Football League Independence Division showdown. Winslow is 0-1 after losing to Northern Highlands in the Rumble on the Raritan but is coming off the first sectional title in program history last year.
Senior Jimmy Wilson Jr., a converted wide receiver who is the Eagles’ new starting quarterback, threw for 118 yards and ran for a touchdown in his debut at the position.
These teams have not met since 2013, when Delsea claimed a 35-0 victory.
Evans (14-8 last week, 20-13 season): Delsea 30, Winslow Township 21
Minnick (12-10 last week, 18-15 season): Delsea 28, Winslow Township 20
Cosentino (13-9 last week, 20-13 season): Delsea 30, Winslow Township 21
Paulsboro ran into a terrific quarterback last week when Haddonfield’s Declan McCarthy accounted for five touchdowns in a 44-26 Bulldawgs’ win. Now the Red Raiders must face a sensational running back in James Hill.
The Woodstown junior set a school record with 312 yards rushing and scored six TDs as the Wolverines opened the season with a 46-19 win over Haddon Heights. He and his teammates will have redemption on their mind after suffering a 35-8 loss at Paulsboro last year.
Kevin Harvey’s head coaching debut did not go as planned but he will have his Red Raiders prepared to bounce back. Rocco Pellegrini connected with Preston Moore for three touchdowns last week.
Deptford rewarded new coach Pat Landis with a victory in his debut as it knocked off Triton in convincing fashion, 48-18. Quarterback CJ Carter completed 7-of-8 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score.
Audubon is coming off a 30-20 loss to Maple Shade. Highly touted quarterback Scott Lynch had touchdowns through the air and on the ground but did throw three interceptions.
Washington Township was the No. 1 seed in South Jersey, Group 5 last year, and Kingsway ended up winning the title. Both expect to be championship contenders this season, so this should be an exciting game.
Kingsway has won nine of the 10 all-time matchups between these teams, including a 21-14 victory last year and a double-overtime thriller the season before. But the Dragons are coming off a disappointing 28-14 loss to Williamstown in their opener and hope to get back on track. Camillo Marusco ran for 74 yards and a touchdown.
The Minutemen rebounded from a 28-21 loss to Toms River North with a 45-12 victory over Eastern last Friday. Quarterback Jared Dzierzgowski ran for two scores and had a pick-six on defense.
Fresh off a 28-14 upset over Kingsway, Williamstown will seek another statement-making win when it heads to Millville. Quarterback Drew Craig threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for one to help the Braves even their record at 1-1.
The Thunderbolts are also 1-1 after losing to Irvington last week, 25-17. Jacob Zamot threw for 216 yards and a TD in the loss.
