Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández is in peak form with the Los Angeles Galaxy and in 26 appearances has scored 14 goals and provided two assists. Over the weekend the 33-year-old reached 201 career goals in club competitions and he has been involved in nine direct goal contributions in the last six matches.

The LA Galaxy ace’s numbers speak for themselves and he is the Mexican striker with the best goal ratio so far this season in club competitions. Unfortunately, Chicharito has not received an international call up since 6 September 2019, when he scored the opening goal in Mexico’s 3-0 win over the United States with Gerardo Martino as the manager.

That was the last time the former Real Madrid striker wore the Mexico jersey, because five days later he watched on from the bench as El Tri lost 4-0 against Argentina in San Antonio, Texas. The reason why he didn’t play is because he left camp to go to a private party with a couple of teammates without the permission of Martino and it became a huge scandal.

So even though Hernández is Mexico’s all-time leading scorer and in peak form prior to the start of the FIFA World Cup, Martino decided from that moment that Chicharito would not receive a call up under his tenure. ‘El Tri’ have played 47 games without Hernández and they have a record of 27 wins, 12 draws and eight defeats.

Chicharito held talks with Martino earlier this year about returning to play one last World Cup with Mexico, but he has yet to receive a call up. The national boss confirmed that he met with Hernández, but he has decided to use other strikers like Henry Martín, Santiago Giménez and Rogelio Funes Mori.
